Green Guide Gent App: Your Guide to Sustainable Living in Ghent

Green Guide Gent App: Your Guide to Sustainable Living in Ghent

For Green Guide Gent — a co-creative project by Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, VisitGent, Ghent University, HOGENT, KU Leuven (Gent), LUCA School of Arts, and Odisee University of Applied Sciences — I designed and developed an iOS & Android app during my Graduate Degree in Programming at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences.

The Green Guide Gent App lets users explore tips, tricks, and articles about sustainable living in #Ghent. The app highlights eco-friendly restaurants, shops, green transportation, and recycling tips, bringing together climate-conscious, plant-based, zero-waste, and circular businesses to show how #Ghent is committed to sustainability.

In addition to informative content, the app also offers a digital loyalty card. Users can register and access exclusive discounts and promotions at sustainable merchants.

The Green Guide App has two separate user flows. Consumers explore sustainable businesses, check recycling tips, and benefit from promotions via the loyalty card. Merchants get access to a management dashboard to easily add and manage their promotions, offers, and articles.

During development, I was guided by Michael Vanderpoorten and Philippe De Pauw - Waterschoot, with regular meetings with Elena Lievens as the Green Guide Gent contact person.

The project involved interesting technical challenges, such as optimizing the user experience and efficient data handling.

The app was built with Expo React Native, using Strapi as a headless CMS. Axios and React Query handle API communication and caching, while SocketIO enables real-time updates.

Styling is implemented with NativeWind, bringing Tailwind-like styling to React Native.
